He he, okej, okej.

http://www.timbro.se/bokhandel/pdf/9175668277.pdf”

Perhaps the most important ability in PR is that of testing. In today’s ever-evolving media landscape, bla bla bla… Well – testing gets more important. Campaigns are now more than ever working according to Darwinism:

”If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down. But I can find out no such case.”

This is how I put it:

The old school were about big planned strikes. But that was before The Evolution Revolution. Campaigns evolves nowadays, so that’s how we roll. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t be able to keep up with the super-fast reality of our time.

Density is one of my favorite words, since it is so applicable in communications. Having a sense of how to accomplish high density is essential. Wikipedia says the density of a material is defined as its mass per unit volume. So it is a content:nothing ratio.

Low-dense copy or art is defined by the amount of unnecessary information. Everything should be additive. Either by adding something we didn’t already know, or by adding a sense of connection/identification, or by adding style. In the densest of worlds, an information unit adds both. Extract your content through these principles, and high density will enter.

So if you want to express a good idea in a highly dense way, the main thing is not to know what is good but to know what is bad, unnecessary and so on. As Warren Buffett put it, success is not about doing things right, it is about not doing them wrong.

Ultimately, reaching high-density is about eliminating boredom, since people generally do not like boredom.

I think it is a problem we the digital natives have with many books, where authors dilutes everything they have to say, stretching the text length just to fill out a paperback. At the same time, that problem doesn’t seem to count for television, where density seems to hit new record lows nowadays. Any dull TV show concept can pass into the 1 hour slot – and we watch it.

So what am I implying here? Well, that density is a much better guideline than the amount of characters in a text or the amount of elements in a picture. Never try to squeeze something just for the “purpose” of extending a piece. Density first. Because density has a self-purpose while volume hasn’t.

The internet has a big, big problem aswell: its volatility. The user perception is low-dense. When I am spending, say 30 seconds, with the dancing monkey app on Facebook, it is an experience of much lower density than some other 30 second slots my mind has experienced. So the value of 30 seconds isn’t equivalent to that of another 30 seconds. Density differ them. When interacting with computers, it seems our mind doesn’t really run on all cylinders. We are sort of emotionally distanced. It’s not as touchable as many other channels. Fuck, I don’t even remember what I did in front of the screen five minutes ago (although Facebook seems a plausible answer).

The irony of it all is that computers disengages our brains, putting them in some sort of mental vacuum (this is not a personal pseudo-psychological attempt but a well documented fact), yet engagement is the number one catch-phrase of social media experts. Perhaps all of this is a bit of topic, but the internet is somewhat over-rated as a communications tool since time spent there offers a less dense impact on people.

Having said this, you realize I am not myself The Father of All Density. But formulating a density theory might be a first step.

Being thoughtful, I now realize it was a lie to say there are only two kinds of talkers. Except dot and comma persons, there are exclamation marks persons. The founder of the company I work for is one of those. Everything he says is a shout-out! Let’s do this! Let’s do that! Gaaaah! Is that ADD? Most likely.

There is also a certain type of persons that overuse semi-colon. Most people that ever uses semi-colon, overuse it. These are the quasi-intellectuals.

When it comes to talking, there are two kinds of persons. There are persons who use dots when they talk and there are those who use commas. Dot persons are punchy. Comma persons are flowy.

Talking with commas is like wandering around, back and forth and things sort of follows. It is reasoning in the making. It is a very sympathetic way of talking.

There is nothing sympathetic about dot talking. Think James Ellroy. The word BAM comes to mind. Dot talking is sort of bam bam bam.

I have two colleagues personifying these two types. Tom is dotty. I think he pursued it from rap music. And his favourite slang word is actually bam. Then there is Marcus, a comma talker. I told him about that and he recounted a job position he held in his youth (I’m not saying he is old by now. I’M NOT SAYING THAT.). His job was to write radio transcripts, in which you remove all the dots. If your job has been to remove all the dots, it’s unlikely you become a dot person. So he became a distinguished comma person.

Always weigh whether you need dots or commas for a given writing project or meeting presentation.

I am a social media ignostic. Ignosticism, as described by Wikipedia, is the theological position that every other theological position (including agnosticism) assumes too much about the concept of God and many other theological concepts. Thus, an ignostic regards the question ”Do you believe in God?” as meaningless, having the same logical status as asking ”Which color has Tuesday?”.

In the same way, as a social media ignostic, I cannot answer whether I believe in social media or not, since there is no valid definition of what ”social media” is. Most persons regards define social media as web services that emerged after 2005, like Youtube, Facebook, blogs and Twitter, ignoring the fact that e-mail, online mass media, events and other platforms are as socially interactive or even more as the services included in the ‘social media’ term.

So the common definition is quite out of touch with etymology. At the same time, if you redefine the term, aligning it with the actual meaning of ”social”, all media would be included, since all media are more or less social, which would make the term useless by that reason instead.

It is just very confusing. To paraphrase Grover Norquist, my opinion is that we should drag the ‘social media’ term into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.

Aren’t creative agencies a bit over-the-top sometimes? Eager to always come up with some kind of twisted and different solution. This creativity bias can be a problem to business-orientation. Because being very imaginative is not always the solution. Sometimes the best idea might be the most boring one. Sometimes harsh business development or publicity works are better alternatives over conceptual stuff in new channels. Ambitious creatives should downplay their creative ambition in cases when the 1A solution happens to be more beneficial for the client than the… I don’t know… dancing monkey iPhone app? Often, the most progressive agencies over-emphasize on being different. Being odd is not necessarily the same as being strategic.
